Keeping it Real - Arm Exercises

Winter has got to be the toughest time to get up early and go to the gym to get a workout done. I struggle so much to get out of bed on the cold mornings. Luckily enough, I’ve managed to find some stuff that can be done at home provided you have space and a stability ball and some dumbells to add on. All it takes is 20 minutes or even 10 minutes. This usually goes a long way in giving you the happy hormone so that your day is much smoother. The following exercises below can be tried at home regulary to help trim the flaps. key word is regularly, usually 2 or 3 times a week to keep arms well toned.

Summer Bodies are made in winter! - 28 June 2013

It’s been a very tough last couple of weeks, hectic deadlines and sleepless nights spent working. Naturally with the cold weather I’ve been avoiding the gym like the plague and opting to head straight home and catch up with work into the late night. The juggling act from career woman to Wifey and being the best Mother is always tough. Because of the hectic hours I prioritised spending more time with my son in the evening so he could have his fair share of Mommy time, and this meant cutting out gym, which I easily did.

Just as I had given up on my gym routine I was reminded that summer bodies are made in winter! This meant I had to get back on track and get into my gym routine if I wanted to be in shape by the time summer came. I managed to pack up my gym bag on Monday and put this in my car unfortunately I went the whole week without going to the gym until today! I had decided today was D day as the week had been hectic plus I had indulged in a bit of Phuza Thursday drinks at a corporate dinner and I knew I had packed on the calories and had to do something about it!

I decided to up the ante and do some cardio with some leg and arm weights, these had been gathering dust for some time now so I was quite happy to bring them out. I managed to do a 60 minute cardio work out which included 3 sets of 10 minute jogs on the treadmill alternating the speed at every minute between 5.5 and 9.5 speed levels, managed to burn off an odd 200 kilo-caloriesJ. I then proceeded to do the stepper for 10 minutes and ended the workout with some rowing and it was awesome! My energy levels were back up, finally! I’m determined to keep at it and hopefully by the time summer arrives I’ll be looking the part!!!

Keeping It Real - 12 June 2013

After the hectic workout I had the previous evening I didn't think that I would make it to the gym, but an afternoon meeting ended earlier than expected and I found myself driving to the gym yet again, seems like this gym thing is turning out to be a fun thing. I decided to take it easy for this workout.

 To give myself a bit of a boost I started my 20 minute warm-up jog on the treadmill and then proceeded with some abdominal exercises;

3 sets of 10 leg raisers with stability ball

50 push ups

20 arm push ups with 2kg dumbells

3 sets of 10 second planks

100 modified sit ups

6 minute quick walk on the stepper

While this was a laid back exercise plan for the day, I felt excited and happy that I'd been managing to attend the gym consistently in the week. To top my excitement for that day, it seemed as if the scales were slowly tipping in my favour slowly but surely. The scale had gone down by just over a kilogram!!!! Just what I needed to keep me going and boost my energy! I was now certain that a balanced eating plan coupled with loads of water and exercise would work for me.

I'm now more determined more than ever to do this, thanks to continuous encouragement from my buddies and family <3 <3

Keeping it Real - 11 June

There's nothing quite letting off some steam after a hard day of work. Today was a particularly challenging day with loads of meetings and decisions to be made, by the time the end of the day I was super exhausted but decided that a gym trip was necessary considering that it had been about two days since my last visit.

Today I was in a Pop Rock Contemporary mood so my playlist included Simply Red, A bit of Michael Jackson and for the cooling down training a bit of Cliff Richard, my playlist was simply old school and I loved it!

To kick start my work out I did a 20 minute run on the treadmill for 2.2kms at an average speed of 8.5km an hour.

4 sets of 20 arm circles

50 arm raisers with Stability ball

5 sets of 10 second planks

40 arm raisers with 2kg dumbbells

50 sit ups

20 star leg and hand raisers

20 calf raisers at 30kgs

10 calf raisers at 22.5kgs

10  90 degree leg raisers

10 minutes on the stepper

My work out was just over an hour but it was just what I needed after a long day in the office. My day felt complete as I left the busy gym headed for home, I was relaxed and didn't feel as tense as I had when I walked into the gym, the happy hormones were at play :)

Keeping It Real - 8 June

So it's all well and good to decide you're going to lose weight and to assess where changes need to be made but ultimately action is required! So with my master plan on hand, I decided to get moving!

Started off with some cardio training to get the heart pumping then some weight training for the muscles and then some toning exercises.

So without further resistance I took the plunge and this is how my 'kick-off' exercise plan went:

20 minutes run on the treadmill for warm up

100 sit ups

40 leg raisers with the stability ball

60 arm raisers with the stability ball with 2kg dumbbells

60 star arm and leg raisers

5 sets of 10 second planks

20 weight arm push ups

100 squats

20 minute cycle on the cycling machine.

After almost 2 hours of working out I was done, this workout was done more out of frustration from the previous night's dress revelation! I did however feel good and I felt so energetic! This was the beginning of many more days to come, and in my mind I was hoping I'd be able to keep it up.....

Reality Check

Before our son was born I used to be an avid gym enthusiast. Throughout my pregnancy I’d go regularly to the gym for a quick 20 minute walk and try and find exercises that would accommodate my growing belly. The day before I had the caesarean section, I still went to the gym and did a good long walk on the treadmill and came off feeling so energetic. For me the plan seemed simple, I’d have a baby, take six weeks off and then get back to my usual gym routine and shed off all the baby weight such that in no time I would be back to my pre-pregnancy weight!

I had heard so many stories that breastfeeding would help me lose weight so this was a plus for me as I had planned to breast feed our son and even planned to extend breast feeding so it all seemed simple that I would be ‘back to normal’ in no time, after all the celebrities seemed to do it in a month or two so I was convinced I’d do the same. As it turns out the joke was on me! 20 months later, a few or perhaps several wardrobe changes and email notifications from my local gym notifying me of membership cancellation here I am documenting my journey, my journey to lose weight and get fit. This is the real deal account with no sugar coating of a regular mother just trying to lose weight.

When I found out we were pregnant I was in between a size 10 and 12 if I was really stretching it. My weight then was on average 68kgs, not bad for a person of my height and I was just in the right body mass index range. In the ensuing months, as my body began to change I gradually gained weight as to be expected, I was particular about my food intake and ate healthy most of the time except for the random cravings for chocolates, hot chocolate and my favourite pork pies! I wasn’t about to be policing myself about my food choices as after all I was pregnant so I did have an excuse to eat what I wanted plus with my regular pregnant gym routine I was fine. At the height of my pregnancy I weighed a whopping 85kgs, that was a good 16kgs gain to which my gynae agreed was normal and was an acceptable weight gain.

The problem….20 months later I still weighs 85kgs and this time round I’m not carrying a baby! Initially I thought it was all the food I was consuming while I was breastfeeding but alas after 14 months of breastfeeding I eventually weaned off my son and there was no sign of any weight loss at all! That is where my journey begins.

So earlier this year I decided I’d claim my body back and while I did not make any new year’s resolutions out loud my secret resolution was that I would shed off all the pounds (*Laughs out loud to self*). I bought all the necessary gear, running shoes, headbands, gym gear the works, I had it all, I even downloaded the Endomondo sports tracker app to keep me company and to monitor my workout plans.

It started off well and thanks to a good support system, I even running in the mornings and going to the gym regularly……..until winter came along. I slowly began giving into my cravings, chocolates, sweets, cakes, muffins, chocolate mousse, my favourite potato chips and the healthy food crept out of my meals like a joke! With added work pressures I had to work late and cut out gym hours and went from regular gym to no gym at all! Thus that weight crept up again.

It was upon a dinner invitation in the last week that I decided enough was enough, I had at least an option of 10  dresses and not a single one would fit (*wails*), my clothes were much smaller! I went onto the scale and BOOM 86.8kgs! My heart sank and I knew I had to do something; my initial thought was that our son usually fiddles around with the scale so maybe it was giving me a false reading to which my husband hurriedly defended confirming it was working accurately. It was then that I decided immediate action was required and so began my journey, this time a serious journey which I hope will yield results that I want!

I’m sure that there are many moms out there who have gone through the same experience and struggle to lose weight; I hope that my blog posts will give them encouragement to get back into shape and let them know that they are not alone in their weight loss journeysJ
